A strike turned in to a deadly zone

I hope that organisations will learn; how they should handle their internal issues by not letting things get this far and also by not involving unions in their internal issues. I am not only refering the organisation but also the workers, they should learner to speak for them self and they should not let the unions interfere in their internal organisational issues

I have to say that sometimes I find unions useless and I do not see the need for them and for people to pay for them. The mine workers at the Marikana were protesting for wages increase and 43 lives were lost during the protest. Why do they have to strike while they have a union that can represent them in a more professional way instead of run in the street and chanting? Where was the National Union of Mineworkers' (Num) at the time the miners needed the union the most read more.
I think that before we risk our live; we should consider asking ourselves why do we have unions and why do we have to pay for them. The reason why I want you to ask yourself this question is, because we pay for unions to represent us not for us to do their jobs. By the way what is their job because if we have a problem we have to go and protest on the streets, risking our live for us to voice out concerns instead of them handling the issue professionally?
From a communications point of view I would say that there was lack of communication from the organisation with its employees as well as the unions with its union members.

  1. the unions should always communicating the people and let them know what is going on because they don't that they create issues like this,i really i Agree with its either they do their job or they hire others who can be able to do better jobs than them because they should help people as they trust that they are there to represent them

  2. The unions are suppose to comprise of well skilled and profesional individuals who have the skills to represent other peoples concerns and complains. i also think that since they are getting paid they should be the ones who voice their clints opinions and come with valid solutions without taking the matter into streets.

  3. Much could have been prevented earlier to avoid problems. PR was very much essential to this tragedy and I don't think a lot of PR was considered.

    1. Yes I agree with you PR was essentially in this issue but I do not even that the mine has a PR department that can handle such issues.

  4. This is a music between the workers union, management and worker they lacked communicing agreement. Now the poor police officers must be excluded because they defended themselves. You can see now how communacation practitioners are important, look at this big responsiblity must be delt with.

    1. Yes our freedom is still suppressed in order for us to live in a democratic country we need to stand up for ourselves but not by being violent.

  7. Every position require someone with knowledge of what they are doing so my point is that unions should always know when to communicate with, management and workers. This positions goes together with skill and experience.

  8. The strike that took place purely shows lack of communication between workers and their union. This situation could have been prevented and handled in a better way.

  9. why do did the union had to hire unqualified people? these causes the strike because other employees are feeling like its not fair,we need to communicate with our employees as much as we do with major shareholders or clients

  12. there was a break down in communication between trhe managemnt and the workers, the PRP of Marikane Mine was suppose to make sure that this stays internal and that the issue was solved before the media could get hold of the news.....now what is left is for them to do damage control
